PM phone calls with Dr Ghani and Dr Abdullah

The Prime Minister spoke separately to President-elect Dr Ashraf Ghani and Dr Abdullah Abdullah yesterday (22 September). 

The phone calls followed the agreement to form a National Unity Government in Afghanistan.

A Downing Street spokesperson said:

The PM spoke separately to both President-elect of Afghanistan Dr Ghani and Dr Abdullah this morning to congratulate them on the announcement of a National Unity Government.

He congratulated Dr Ghani on his election as President and reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to Afghanistan. Dr Ghani thanked the PM for the commitment and engagement the UK has shown to Afghanistan including at the recent NATO Wales summit. The PM also congratulated Dr Abdullah on his role in the agreement which represents a historic democratic transfer of power for Afghanistan.

All 3 leaders agreed on the importance of forming a government and signing the Bilateral Security Agreement and Status of Forces Agreement quickly in order to continue to build security and stability in Afghanistan. They also discussed the importance of making rapid progress on lasting peace in Afghanistan and the region. They looked forward to the London Conference on Afghanistan this November as a mark of Afghanistan’s progress and the long-term commitment of the international community
