Photo exhibition celebrates London nightlife

To mark six months until the start of 24-hour services on some Underground lines, works by several of the world's leading photographers are now being exhibited at Westminster station.

The 'Free the Night' exhibition is on until 12 April and brings together works by Sam Taylor Johnson OBE, Nick Knight OBE, Sir Cecil Beaton, Juergen Teller, Corinne Day, Rankin and others.

The display, delivered in partnership with Annin Arts Gallery, features 24 prints - some reaching nine foot by six foot - arranged in the station's alcoves. The pieces celebrate the capital's rich history of arts and culture and capture a range of perspectives on the night time and its possibilities for the 140,000 customers who use the station each day.

The exhibition introduces a series of 'Firsts for the Tube' that will include various events taking place on and around the Underground network ahead of all-night weekend services from 12 September on central sections of the Northern, Piccadilly, Central, Victoria and Jubilee lines.

Gareth Powell, London Underground's Director of Strategy and service development, said: 'We are now just six months away from the first ever 24-hour services operating on London Underground. The introduction of the Night Tube, which will cut journey times and open up new possibilities across the night-time economy, is a historic step in our modernisation of the Underground and a real 'first' for the Underground that will boost jobs and benefit the economy by hundreds of millions of pounds.'

The Night Tube is set to transform journeys across London for millions of people, cutting journeys by an average of 20 minutes, with some cut by more than an hour. Night time services will also increase access to jobs, help maintain
London's status as an exciting place to live, work and visit and boost the economy by £360million.
