Police Officer quarterly strength statistics

An Official Statistics Publication for Scotland.

Police officer numbers are 1,038 higher than in March 2007, maintaining the Scottish Government’s commitment to a 1,000 more officers.

Scotland’s Chief Statistician yesterday published statistics on Police Officer Quarterly Strength, which gives the number of full-time equivalent police officers employed by Police Scotland.

The key findings of the statistics are:

  • There were 17,272 full-time equivalent (FTE) police officers in Scotland on 30 June 2015.
  • This is an increase of 1,038 FTE police officers (+6.4%) from the 16,234 police officers recorded at 31 March 2007.
  • Police officer numbers have decreased by 23 FTE officers in the last quarter from 31 March 2015 (-0.1%), and have decreased by 46 FTE officers in the last year from 30 June 2014 (-0.3%).

The figures released yesterday were produced by professionally independent statistical staff free from any political interference, in accordance with professional standards set out in the Code of Practice for Official Statistics.
