Pope Francis to address the European Parliament

Pope Francis arrived this morning at 10.30 for an official visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg. He will deliver a formal address to MEPs in plenary session at 11.15 before meeting with the presidents of all EU institutions, Martin Schulz (European Parliament), Herman Van Rompuy (European Council), Prime Minister Matteo Renzi (Italian Council presidency) and Jean-Claude Juncker (European Commission).

The previous visit by a sovereign pontiff was on 11 October 1988, when Pope John Paul II delivered an address to MEPs in Strasbour
