Postcards from the children of Wales to NATO world leaders

Primary school pupils from Wales are to be given the opportunity to write a personal message to the NATO world leaders about their hopes for the future.

Five classes of nine and ten year olds from across Wales and one Urdd Adran (community group) have been asked by the First Minister to answer the question of what they would like to have changed in the world by the time they have become adults.

Each of the 28 NATO World leaders, including British Prime Minister David Cameron, US President Barack Obama and French President Francois Hollande will be personally given one of these messages on a bilingual  postcard during the Summit. The postcards will also depict images of Wales from their area.

First Minister Carwyn Jones said;

“The sheer number and seniority of world leaders coming to Wales in September is unprecedented and as a Government we wanted children growing up in the host nation to feel a part of this. NATO leaders will hear the hopes of the children growing up in towns and villages right across Wales  as they sit in summit talks and we will have given a group of children a once in  a lifetime  opportunity to send a message to some of the most prominent leaders of the world.”

Secretary of State for Wales Stephen Crabb said:

“This is a fantastic opportunity for local children to voice their hopes for the future as Wales takes the global stage. The Wales Summit is the largest gathering of international leaders ever to take place in Britain and I can't think of a better platform for Welsh children to showcase their ideas and ambitions.”

Mr Andrew Rothwell from Mount Pleasant Primary School in Newport who teaches one of the classes taking part said;

“Writing these postcards has lit a flame in these children – we’d already talked a lot in class about this summit that’s happening on their doorstep and to now have the chance to be a part of it has really captured their imagination.”

Efa Gruffudd Jones, Chief Executive of the Urdd adds;

“Adran Treuddyn was the first Urdd Adran established in 1922 and we are so proud that the Adran is still offering Urdd members fantastic opportunities like this. I am very pleased  that world leaders will leave Wales inspired with the brilliant thoughts of Welsh children.”

Over a hundred nine and ten year old children are writing postcards to the world leaders. They are from from PIllgwenlly Primary School Newport, Mount Pleasant Primary School Newport, Ysgol Gymraeg Aberystwyth, Ysgol yr Hendre Caernarfon, Ysgol Pencae in Cardiff and Adran yr Urdd Treuddyn.  All the postcards will be displayed at the summit with specially selected individual messages given directly to the 28 NATO leaders.
