Praise for learning disability nurses

Launch of Strengthening the Commitment: Living the Commitment Report.

Scotland’s Chief Nursing Officer has praised the work of learning disability nurses across the country, ahead of a major conference.

Fiona McQueen also reiterated the Scottish Government’s commitment to learning disability nursing in Scotland.

The conference, being held in Derby yesterday (18 June) is the launch platform for the “Strengthening the Commitment: Living the Commitment” report. Professor McQueen joins together with her counterparts from across the UK to highlight the contributions and achievements of their learning disability nurses.

In 2012, “Strengthening the Commitment: The report of the UK Modernising Learning Disabilities Nursing Review” was published. In the past three years a tremendous amount has been achieved in all four countries as learning disability nurses have expanded their skills, knowledge and competencies, developed measurable outcomes and evidence-based interventions, have significantly strengthened their research skills, and are creating a critical mass of leaders to effect further change.

These achievements have only been possible because of the clear commitment to implementation of the recommendations in Strengthening the Commitment across all four countries and the leadership shown within each country.

Professor McQueen said:

“I’m delighted to be launching this report, which identifies the achievements of learning disability nurses and celebrates their innovative and successful work in a range of settings.

“I would like to join my fellow CNOs in congratulating and thanking each and every professional who has made such a valuable contribution.

“I am so proud to see the progress made and the level of engagement and support for this work. It is making a real difference to people with learning disabilities and the nursing profession.

“I look forward to working with everyone in continuing this important work, which plays such a vital role in our communities.”
