Professional bodies announce scoping report for improving health and care through professional standards

BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, IHRIM: the Institute for Health Records and Information Management and Socitm are announcing the start of a scoping report to analyse the current skills frameworks which exist in the Health and Care Informatics.

This is part of a broader collaboration between these organisations aimed at building an open community focused on better health and care through information.

Andy Kinnear, Chair of BCS Health, part of the Chartered Institute for IT, explains: “The creation of this scoping report marks a very exciting time for health informatics. Technology has an immense and profound impact on health and wellbeing. Therefore it’s time for the profession that generates, implements and supports that technology to mature to meet the increasing demand on our skills and capability. It is vital that we not only support current informatics professionals with a clear career path and professional development opportunities, but also attract new generations into the profession.”

The scoping report will be commissioned and hosted by BCS and overseen by all the professional bodies. The report will draw on a wide range of expertise from the community, and an open workshop will be held on 4 July to gather ideas and evidence.

David Evans, Director of Policy at BCS, who will be commissioning the report says: “We feel that this scoping report will start to solve the mysteries of health and care informatics; who is involved, and what they need to do well for the public. An important part of the research is looking at existing professional standards and gaps which exist across the health and care informatics profession. We hope that the results from the report will open up a whole new world of opportunity in shaping the profession for years to come.”

Andy concludes: “A key factor in professionalism is the development of skills and knowledge being shared across our communities and individuals. This will help provide a roadmap for all of us to work together, individually, and on shared goals.”

The report is scheduled for publication in early September.
