Progress made on Digital Single Market for Europe

Fiona Hyslop attends EU Culture and Audiovisual Council.

Fiona Hyslop spoke at the EU Culture and Audiovisual Council yetserday to ensure Scotland's interests are represented in the review of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive, part of the new European Digital Single Market Strategy.

Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society Gunther Oettinger presented the initiative to Member States for the first time. The strategy set out the upcoming proposals which focus on:

  • Better Access for consumers and businesses to online goods and services across Europe
  • Creating the right conditions for digital networks and services to flourish
  • Maximising the growth potential of our European Digital Economy

Cabinet Secretary for Culture Fiona Hyslop, who was the lead minister speaking on behalf of the UK at the council meeting, said yesterday:

"I welcome the publication of the Commission's strategy on this important issue and I look forward to more detailed discussions in the coming months.

"Today signalled the beginning of the debate on this issue and I will work hard to deliver for Scotland's creative industries whilst at the same time giving our citizens access to the services they want.

“We have a real opportunity to look at the market and understand how we can deliver the best for Europe’s creative industries and consumers and continue to create great music, art, films and diverse cultural content that reflects our own cultural heritage.

"Leading for the UK on this issue today is welcome and I hope this is replicated in other important Councils in the spirit of the Smith recommendations."
