Public Sector Employment, Q1 2014

In Q1 2014

  • total UK public sector employment decreased by 103,000 from Q4 2013 to 5.409 million - the fall largely explained by the reclassification from the public sector to the private sector of Lloyds Banking Group.
  • UK public sector employment is at its lowest level, on a headcount basis, since the start of the series in 1999.
  • employment in UK local government, at 2.370 million, is 27,000 lower than at Q4 2013.
  • employment in UK central government, at 2.847 million, is 14,000 higher than at Q4 2013.
  • employment in UK public corporations, at 192,000, is 90,000 lower than at Q4 2013.
  • private sector employment increased by 447,000, to 25.126 million - boosted by the transfer into the private sector of Lloyds Banking Group.
  • total UK public sector employment is 280,000 lower than at Q1 2013.
  • total UK private sector employment is 1.059 million higher than at Q1 2013.
