Public sector strikes: 15 October 2014

Find out more about the government response to the PCS union strike.

During the strike, you may experience delays in accessing our face-to-face or telephone services. You can access many government services online via GOV.UK.

A Cabinet Office spokesperson said:

We want to thank the overwhelming majority of civil servants who did not vote for today’s action and have reported for work as usual.

The leadership of PCS have yet again made inflated claims about how many are taking part in strike action, and again they will be shown to be wrong.

The strong indication is that the number of civil servants on strike is fewer than 72,000 – less than a third of the PCS’ inflated membership claims – making it a new low for a national PCS strike.

Well-rehearsed contingency plans are ensuring that nearly all key public services are being delivered as usual, and all Jobcentres opened this morning.

Nevertheless, it cannot be right for the PCS leadership to threaten to disrupt the lives of hardworking people when they are relying on a weak mandate for strike action, backed by less than a fifth of their members and based on a ballot that was conducted 18 months ago.
