Annual rise of 2.7 per cent

Scottish manufacturing exports are up.

The volume of manufactured goods sold to overseas markets grew by 2.1 per cent during the first quarter of 2015, according to figures out today.

The Scottish Index of Manufactured Exports shows growth of 2.1 per cent in real terms compared with the previous quarter and a 2.7 per cent rise in the year ending March 2015.

In the latest quarter, exports figures are up in two of the largest exporting categories – Refined Petroleum, Chemical and Pharmaceutical Products (0.6 per cent) and Food and Drink (5.5 per cent). Exports of Non-Metallic, Other Manufacturing and Repair Products also increased (5.4 per cent).

Business Minister Fergus Ewing said:

“It is very encouraging to see strong growth in Scottish manufactured exports over the last quarter and year. In particular, there has been significant quarterly growth in the Non-Metallic, Other Manufacturing and Repair Products and Food and Drink Sectors.

“Coming just one week after official statistics showed the Scottish economy grew by 0.6 per cent in the first three months of this year – and after labour market statistics showing falling unemployment and a six-year low in youth unemployment – this contributes to a very positive picture of increasing economic expansion.

“This is reinforced by today’s statistics showing annual manufacturing exports growing by 2.7 per cent.

“Challenges do remain for some sectors and this quarter there were decreases for some engineering sub-industries and the smaller exporting sectors.

“Through our enterprise agencies, the Scottish Government is committed to strengthening and supporting Scotland’s economic links in overseas markets. By continuing to invest in and increase exports we can help build sustainable economic growth for Scotland and highlight the country’s position as a place of international trade and investment.”
