Ray Long inaugurated as the new President of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT

Ray Long has been inaugurated as President of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, at the recent AGM. Ray is a Director at the Department for Work and Pensions. Paul Martynenko, Vice President and Technical Executive for IBM in Europe, has been named as BCS Deputy President.

Ray says of his tenure: “This is a huge honour and I am looking forward greatly to the coming year as we work on our vision to make IT good for society. This is an exciting time to be part of the Institute as we engage with partners, organisations, government and individuals to address the wider issues around the role of technology in society, from education to health and personal data. I will also be using my term as President to promote my personal interest in driving up the success rate of IT projects, with a positive focus on what we know to be the critical factors in delivering successful outcomes.”

Ray Long, FBCS, CITP, CEng, is an experienced IT leader with a strong awareness of current IT issues. He began his IT career as a computer programmer at the Department of Health and Social Security in 1977 and, amongst other roles, has subsequently served as Head of IT and e-Business at the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions, CEO of the Northern Ireland Business Development Service, Programme Director for the NHS Choose and Book service, Major Projects Director in the Cabinet Office, and Director of Business Tax Change and Corporate Services Change in HMRC. After graduating from the Government’s Major Projects Leadership Academy, he returned in 2014 to the now re-named Department for Work and Pensions, initially as Senior Responsible Owner of the Department’s Infrastructure Modernisation Programme and, more recently, as Director of Technology Platforms.

Ray has also been an Associate Lecturer with the Open University since 1993, delivering programmes on leadership and strategy in the UK and internationally. He has served on various BCS boards and is a Chartered Fellow of BCS as well as a Fellow of a number of other professional bodies. A Freeman of the City of London, Ray also serves on the Court of the Information Technologists’ City Livery Company, chairing the Government Panel.

Paul Martynenko, FBCS, who takes up the role of Deputy President alongside Ray, is the Vice President and Technical Executive for IBM in Europe. Joining IBM in the late 1970s Paul has held a variety of technical professional, management, and executive positions across IBM, in development, delivery, product support, and sales and distribution. He was the IBM IT specialist profession leader in UK and Europe for 10 years.

Paul has supported the BCS Professionalism Programme since 2005 serving on BCS’ Professionalism Board since its inception in 2008. Paul took on the role of Chair of Professionalism Board in 2011 and was elected as a BCS Trustee and Vice President Professionalism in 2014.

Paul says of his election to Deputy President: “I am really looking forward to working with Ray, our members and staff over this coming year making IT good for society.”
