SOUND OF THE UNDERGROUND

Hear music inspired by the Victoria line throughout April.

Passengers can enjoy new live music every Sunday in April with a series of events on trains and in tickets halls.

Matt Rogers was commissioned by Art on the Underground to create a new composition for its latest project Underline: Art & Music for the Victoria line (2015-16).

Called We Happened to Travel, works will be played by the members of the London Sinfonietta. It will involve solo instrumentalists and also an ensemble piece on the final day.

On the first three Sundays - 3, 10 and 17 April - a soloist will play a duet with a pre-recorded track of themselves on the horn, flute or cello.

These performances will begin at Green Park, Stockwell or Highbury & Islington, and the musician will then travel by Tube to the Northern Ticket Hall at King's Cross St. Pancras, where they will perform again.

The final Sunday in April will feature eight musicians who will journey from different starting points to the same ticket hall, where they will be joined by four trombonists to play an ensemble piece.

Head of Art on the Underground Eleanor Pinfield said: 'This commission is our first ever musical work for London Underground.

'Matt's work is varied and site specific, and with the support of the London Sinfonietta and their incredible players we can present world-class contemporary music to an audience of over 4.2 million daily Tube customers.'

Chief Executive of the London Sinfonietta Andrew Burke said: 'Art on the Underground provides an excellent platform to reach audiences in different ways and to demonstrate that art and music can be found outside traditional spaces such as a museum or a concert hall.'
