The next generation of up and coming TV presenters and news reporters may come from West Dunbartonshire after an award of £9,300 to Skapade Inspirational Development Solution CIC. Earlier this year the group won the rights to broadcast and run Dumbarton TV, an online broadband TV channel and the money will allow them to run a media training programme for young local young people.

Stephen Kirkwood, Founder, said, “We are absolutely delighted to have received a grant from Awards for All. The funding will be going directly into the heart of our community to provide a positive media platform for young people.

“We will provide training in content creation, production, events, camera work, script writing and presenting. We are specifically targeting the hardest to reach groups including the long term unemployed and care leavers helping to give them new skills as well as the confidence and motivation needed for this industry. With our combined expertise in the media industry and help from Awards for All, our project has been given a massive boost in the right direction.”

The Edinburgh Tool Library is the first project of its kind in the UK. A special library with a difference, the organisation loans out their collection of 1200 tools to families from low income households. Thanks to an award of £10,000, the group will be able to deliver an intergenerational training programme for local unemployed youngsters who are looking for work. The young people will be paired with older volunteer mentors who will pass on their skills and experience.

Founder, Chris Hellawell, said, “This award is a real game changer for us. This trainee and mentor pairing will work together to support the overall goals of the tool library whilst building the confidence and transferrable skills of the youngsters involved. Once ready to take the first steps into work, the young people will be supported by staff to identify the strengths and skills that they want to explore further.

“Without doubt, the ‘Tools for Life’ programme would not be able to go ahead without the support of Awards for All. This funding will enable us to change the lives of both trainees and mentors, and help us give them the metaphorical, as well as the literal, tools for success.”

An award of £7,855 to The Mixing Bowl in Aberdeen means they will be able to organise a food festival for people in and around the city. The one day festival will take place at Cults Academy on Sunday 18 September and will be free to all. The main focus of the event will feature a farmers’ market featuring thirty stalls selling local produce.

Sarah Misra, Co-Founder, said, “Our local area in Aberdeen does not have a regular farmers’ market and there’s little opportunity for residents to access the abundance of locally produced food in the region.

Alongside the market will be a street café with lunch food stalls as well as cooking demonstrations, talks and workshops to inspire people to cook with local produce. This special event is an opportunity to involve people from all ages in our community.”

An Awards for All spokesperson said yesterday: “Today we are announcing over £870k that will help communities across Scotland to set up and develop projects run for and by local people. What is clear is the smallest amount of funding can often make the biggest difference to people’s lives. All of these grants are a great way to show the variety of projects that can be funded through Awards for All.”

Awards for All Scotland gives out grants of between £500 and £10,000 to projects that bring communities together to enjoy a range of activities. It is a partnership by sportscotland and Big Lottery Fund. Groups can download this form here.
