Scottish Public Sector Employment

Public Sector Employment Statistics for Scotland, released today by Scotland’s Chief Statistician, show that over the year to Q1 2015, employment in the public sector in Scotland has decreased by 1,000 to 546,800.

In Q1 2015, public sector employment accounted for 20.9 per cent of total employment in the country and private sector employment accounts for 79.1 per cent of total employment in Scotland.

Employment in the private sector in Scotland has increased by 3.0 per cent over the past year with 2,067,900 people employed in the private sector.

In Scotland, the devolved public sector saw an increase of 2,300 since Q1 2014 compared with a decrease of 3,300 in employment in the reserved public sector.

If the major reclassifications were to be excluded from the public sector series, there would be estimated to be 533,300 people employed in the public sector in Q1 2015, a decrease of 300 (0.1%) from 533,600 in Q1 2014.

In Q1 2015, there were 22,630 young people aged 16-24 in employment in the devolved public sector, accounting for 4.6% of total employment in this sector. This is an increase of 1,060 (0.2 percentage points) over the year.

The figures released today were produced by independent statistical staff free from any political interference, in accordance with professional standards set out in the Code of Practice for Official Statistics.

The data is not seasonally adjusted and therefore comparisons should only be made with the same quarter over time.

Devolved public bodies refer to public bodies which are the responsibility of the Scottish Government or Scottish Parliament. This includes the core Scottish Government and Agencies, Non-Ministerial Departments Local Authorities, Police and Fire Services, NHS, Non-Departmental Public Bodies, Public Corporations, Ombudsmen and Commissioners and other significant national bodies.
