Seven organisations awarded £2.5 million to engage more people with art and culture

Seven organisations have been successful in their applications to the latest round of the Arts Council's Strategic Touring programme.

The funding, totalling nearly £2.5 million, will enable them to tour works from different artforms across England.

This programme is designed to help the Arts Council ensure that everyone, everywhere is able to attend and participate in great art and culture.

In particular, the funded projects will focus on areas where engagement with the arts is low, or that rely on touring to provide most of their arts activities, to provide more opportunities for people to get involved.

About the projects

Emccan CIC - Flight of Fantasy

Taking professional Caribbean carnival to new audiences in the Midlands, North and South West of England. By touring performances, costumes and master classes, more people will have opportunities to enjoy traditional Caribbean carnival in their local communities.

Film and Video Umbrella (FVU) - Changing Places

A tour of works by South Asian filmmakers to 11 locations across England that are currently experiencing urban or architectural change. Partnering with heritage and arts organisations, FVU will work with the British Asian community and others interested in exploring Britain’s alternative histories.

Open Eye Gallery - Culture Shifts

Open Eye will lead seven partners across the North West, including the Creative People and Places project in St Helens. Photographers will collaborate with people from across the Liverpool City region to create photo stories that are meaningful to them. During 2017 they will work with curators to develop exhibitions online and at galleries across the North West.

Seachange Arts - Coasters

A three-year project that will take innovative, high quality international indoor and outdoor circus and street arts work to coastal towns across England. The aim is to build stronger relationships with audiences in areas of lower arts engagement and help transform perceptions of coastal towns.

The Spark Arts - Among Ideal Friends

This tour will take theatre performances and workshops to libraries in Leicester, Leicestershire, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and Rutland. Inspired by books and stories for children, the tour will give families and schools new opportunities to take part in arts and culture at venues on their doorstep.

The Touring Consortium Theatre Company

The continuation of this large scale project will take four contemporary productions to communities across the UK. The project will promote sustainable relationships between partner venues, local schools and youth and community groups, and use digital technology, creative learning and participation activities to help establish a legacy of independent theatre-going.

Ziggy's Wish - HOAX, Our Right to Hope

A pilot tour of this award-winning cross-media project, which comprises a dark stage musical and graphic novel. The tour will visit six venues across the North of England, working with arts, health, community, education, military and technology stakeholders. It aims to increase arts engagement among socially excluded audiences and participants, helping to decrease social and self-stigma around mental health.
