Sir Bob Kerslake looks towards ‘The Future Public Servant’ at Collaborate event

Collaborate ignites new debate about 'The Future Public Servant' with high-level panel.

On Tuesday 25th November, Collaborate hosted a fascinating discussion event on who and what the ‘The Future Public Servant’ might look like.  We were delighted to have Sir Bob Kerslake, permanent secretary of the DCLG and former Head of the Civil Service, give the keynote address, discussing what it takes to develop a new type of public servant that is well equipped to deal with new public service challenges.

A top-class panel of public service leaders including Deborah Cadman OBE, Chief Executive of Suffolk County Council and Dr Helen Bevan, Chief of Service Transformation at the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement heped to ignite a new debate around ‘collaborative public services’ that explores new roles for public service workers ahead of a General Election in 2015.

Sir Bob Kerslake said: “It is hard to think of a time since the Second World War when the challenges for leaders in the public sector have been greater. It will require new skills and new ways of working to meet the expectations of politicians and the public.”

Deborah Cadman, OBE also noted: "In the future Public Service has to be different – we can’t lift and shift solutions, we have to develop to them in a locality.  The future is about giving up sovereignty and working across boundaries to deliver what is best for local communities.  It’s about managers who can create whole system solutions and it’s about a relentless focus on our customers and making the most of every pound we spend."

Dr Henry Kippin, Executive Director of Collaborate, said: "leading change in partnership with communities and across the sectors will be a core capability of the future public servant. We are delighted to welcome a top-class panel to kick off Collaborate's work on putting the building blocks in place today".

Collaborate will be looking at some of the themes and ideas from ‘The Future Public Servant’ as part of our 2015 work programme, and we would love to get your input.   If you would like to get involved please do contact the team here.
