Spotlight on pedestrian safety
Up to £5m is to be invested in Tooting and Peckham as part of new pilot pedestrian town centre improvements.
The plans, unveiled by the Mayor and TfL, aim to significantly improve pedestrian safety through redesigned junctions, streets and pavements and raise awareness of safety issues among all road users. Local schools will also be encouraged to give their pupils pedestrian education and training.
The project will begin this autumn, with TfL and the boroughs consulting with local residents and stakeholders on designs and strategies, and an action plan will be developed by the end of the year. After further consultation and feasibility studies, the work will be completed by the end of 2017/18.
he investment is part of TfL's programme to make the Capital's roads safer and more pleasant for pedestrians.
It comes as analysis shows that around 20% of all the collisions where pedestrians were killed or seriously injured in London between 2011 and 2013 occurred in town centres.
