Statement from the Northern Ireland Assembly Commission

Following an initial briefing on Thursday 4 June, 2015, the Assembly Commission held a formal meeting yesterday (Monday, 8 June, 2015) to discuss the flying of two flags without permission over Parliament Buildings on 3 June, 2015.

The Commission received a briefing on the incident from Assembly officials which included details of a number of initial security measures taken to prevent a recurrence as well as a report from the building contractor.

The PSNI have begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident and whether they constitute a criminal offence. That investigation is ongoing and the Assembly is co-operating fully with it. The Assembly will make no further comment on this incident until the police investigation has been completed.

An update report on the incident was issued to all Assembly Members yesterday.
