Stewartstown Road Regeneration Project Shining Example Says Committee

The Assembly Committee for Social Development yesterday visited the Stewartstown Road Regeneration Project (SSRP) in west Belfast.

The project, an inter-community regeneration initiative, began in 1997 and comprises community and commercial rental property land leased on a long term basis from the Housing Executive to aid community development.

Speaking after yesterday’s visit, the Chairperson for the Committee for Social Development Alex Maskey MLA, said yesterday: “My Committee was delighted to have the opportunity today to visit the Stewartstown Road Regeneration Project and to see for ourselves the restoration and economic renewal initiatives which have totally transformed the local area.

“As with any such initiative, its continued growth and success is in no small part due to the vision and absolute commitment of the local communities on both sides of the interface.

“We also commend the Department of Social Development and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive for their continued economic support and unwavering commitment to the people of the area.”

Terry Donaghy, Chairman of the SRRP said yesterday: “We were delighted to welcome Members of the Social Development Committee today. The local community is grateful to the Northern Ireland Housing Executive for the foresight and confidence it has shown in our project since the early stages of the peace process. SRRP has been consistently successful since its inception. It has transformed a formally derelict, decayed, contested interface into a pleasant, vibrant, thriving, shared community space.”
