Student demonstration incident - outcome of misconduct proceedings

Two police constables with the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) have had disciplinary proceedings against them permanently stayed following a misconduct hearing.

The MPS convened a misconduct panel recently (Monday 5 September 2016) in respect of charges that the actions of PC Calvin Lindsay and PC Thomas Barnes amounted to gross misconduct in respect of Honesty and Integrity and Discreditable Conduct. The charges stemmed from an incident at a student demonstration in central London on 9 December 2010. After listening to submissions, the panel decided to permanently stay the proceedings.

A third officer involved in policing the student demonstration, PC Andrew Ott, was dismissed without notice following separate misconduct proceedings held by the MPS in August 2015. This followed a trial at Southwark Crown Court in May 2015 at which PC Ott was convicted of causing actual bodily harm during the demonstration. PCs Ott, Lindsay and Barnes were found not guilty of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice during the same trial.
