Suffragan Bishop of Huddersfield: Jonathan Robert Gibbs

The Queen has approved the nomination of the Reverend Jonathan Robert Gibbs to the Suffragan See of Huddersfield. 

The Queen has approved the nomination of the Reverend Jonathan Robert Gibbs, MA, PhD, Rector of Heswall, in the Diocese of Chester, to the Suffragan See of Huddersfield in the newly created diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales.

The Reverend Jonathan Gibbs

The Reverend Jonathan Gibbs (aged 53), studied at Jesus College, Oxford for his MA and Jesus College, Cambridge for his PhD. He trained for the ordained ministry at Ridley Hall, Cambridge. He served his curacy in the Diocese of Chester at Stalybridge Holy Trinity and Christ Church from 1989 to 1992. He was Chaplain at Basle with Freiburg-im-Breisgau, in the diocese of Europe from 1992 to 1998. Since 1998 he has been Rector of Heswall in the diocese of Chester.

Dr Gibbs has been Chair of the House of Clergy in the Diocese of Chester since 2006 and Chair of the Diocesan Clergy Chairs Forum since 2011. He is a member of General Synod, of the Meissen Commission, linking the Church of England with the Evangelical Church in Germany, and of the Clergy Discipline Commission.

He is married to Toni and they have three children, Harriet (24) who is married to Matthew Curry, Edward (21) and Thomas (18).

His interests include walking, usually accompanied by their Cocker Spaniel, and rummaging in second-hand bookshops. He is a fluent French speaker with a love of France and especially its wines; he also speaks German and Swiss-German. He and his wife, who originally met when working in Paris, enjoy entertaining and making new friends. Dr Gibbs is also a member of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) and of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), committed to supporting village and community life.
