Supporting Scottish Studies

Investment to boost Scots teaching and learning.

Funding to support continuous professional development for teachers involved in delivering the Scottish Studies Award and Scottish literature has been announced by the Scottish Government.

Dr Alasdair Allan, Minister for Scotland’s Languages, recently confirmed £40,000 is being allocated to the Association for Scottish Literary Studies to support its provision of CPD for teachers and continued development of resources to support the study of Scottish literature in classrooms.

Speaking ahead of the ASLS’ Scotland in Focus conference, Dr Allan said:

“The Scottish Government values the contribution that Scottish authors and the Scots language has had, and continues to have, in our rich literary heritage.

“Scottish studies has an important place in our curriculum and we want to support our teachers to help pupils make the most of their learning in this area. Our support, which will allow teachers to attend training focussed on Scotland’s languages and literature, and allow ASLS to continue to deliver their work both nationally and internationally, underlines our commitment.”

Professor Alison Lumsden, President of the Association for Scottish Literary Studies, said:

“The Council and membership of the Association for Scottish Literary Studies are delighted with the support that the Scottish Government has shown by this generous award. It will underpin the work that the organisation undertakes to facilitate schools in their study of the literature and languages of Scotland and will also help it to foster a growing interest in Scottish literature internationally

“We are very pleased that our work to promote the cultural life of Scotland has been acknowledged and supported in this way and this award will allow it to continue. On behalf of the ASLS and all those who work with us, I would very much like to thank the Scottish Government”.
