TUC: Industrial strategy will only succeed with workers’ voices and more ambitious investment

Commenting on the government’s industrial strategy green paper, which was published yesterday (Monday), TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

“It’s good to see a strategy for pro-active government intervention to bring better jobs and higher living standards to every part of the UK. But it will take more than good intentions to succeed – it will need higher public investment, and a greater role for workers in decision making.

“Businesses are more successful when workers are involved in taking decisions about their jobs. So the strategy must put the workforce at the centre of plans to improve productivity – starting with the Prime Minister’s promise to put workers on company boards.

“Public investment is set to be lower than in the last parliament. If the government is serious about closing the gap with our global competitors, the strategy must be backed in March’s budget by new investment in vital infrastructure like transport and broadband.

“Trade unions look forward to working with government and business to make this long-awaited and much-needed industrial strategy deliver for working people.”
