TUC and CBI heads to address inaugural meeting of cross-party Brexit group

The TUC General Secretary yesterday (Monday afternoon) told the inaugural meeting of the Best Brexit All Party Parliamentary Group that working people must not pay the price for Brexit. The Director General of the CBI, Carolyn Fairbairn, will also speak at the event.

TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady welcomed the opportunity to speak to MPs yesterday by saying:

“Working people must not pay the price for Brexit. The ‘best Brexit’ for them means protecting jobs, wages, and rights at work.

“We welcome the Prime Minister’s pledge to protect workers’ rights. But we need something concrete. If the UK commits to future compliance with EU employment rights, it will keep Britain’s workers safe from falling behind and having second-class protection at work.

“We don’t want a ‘made in Britain tax’ slapped on British goods sold to EU countries. So we should continue with common standards for the protection of workers, consumers and the environment.

“Our EU citizen friends, neighbours and workmates who live and work in Britain must not be used as bargaining chips. They need to know that they are welcome to stay in the UK. And the TUC is working with trade unionists around Europe to get the same deal for Brits living and working abroad.”
