TUC backs CBI’s call for certainty for EU citizens in the UK

Commenting on the Confederation of British Industry’s (CBI) call for certainty for migrant workers following the vote to leave the EU, TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

“EU citizens in the UK need cast-iron assurances that they can continue to live, work and study here. David Cameron saying they will face ‘no immediate changes’ simply isn’t good enough.

"EU nationals make a huge contribution to Britain, especially the thousands who work in public services like the NHS. With staffing levels already at crisis point, we cannot afford to lose any more dedicated professionals.

“We need to do more. A smart government would reintroduce the migration impact fund to get cash to areas with high pressure on public services in the face of government cuts.

“Stronger employment rules and enforcement could also help stop bad employers driving down pay and conditions in some sectors, and ensure that migrant workers are not exploited.

“The government must also reassure international students. At a time when universities are facing the loss of vital EU research funding, ministers need to make overseas students feel more welcome.”
