Tech industry welcomes ‘Digital Transformation Plan’

Julian David, techUK CEO, comments on new Government ‘Productivity Plan’.

Responding to the launch of the Government's Productivity Plan Fixing the Foundations: Creating a more prosperous nation, Julian David, CEO of techUK, commented:

"The Government is right to focus on the role of digital technologies in driving the UK economy, and tech innovation is fundamental in driving productivity. The potential for tech-driven productivity growth is highlighted by the technology sector itself, which has demonstrated the highest level of productivity of any sector in the UK economy pre and post the 2008 financial crisis."

"The challenge now is to encourage and support other sectors of the economy to achieve similar productivity gains. That's why I am pleased to see the Chancellor and the Business Secretary will produce a Digital Transformation Plan in the autumn to support the adoption of digital technologies right across the economy. Similarly, proposals to work with regulators on new 'Innovation Plans' must be bold in their vision to back emerging technologies and tech disrupters."

"The UK has a world class communications network, which is a vital driver of productivity. To maintain our leadership position, a supportive policy and regulatory environment is needed to encourage ongoing competition, investment and innovation."

"The government's support for EU Digital Single Market (DSM) initiative in this plan is welcome, and government must continue to work to get the detail right. A leading UK digital economy in 2020 will be fuelled by smart use of data, and the UK must continue to engage on important negotiations on new EU data rules, which could underpin or undermine a truly productive data-driven digital economy."
