TfL’s top travelling tips

A new campaign to help you get the most out of travelling in London has been launched.

New poster and digital adverts are on display across the transport network to promote travel tips including the different payment options available, how to get the best value fares, the benefits of having an online account and how to get a refund.

Get the best value fare

You could save money by travelling off-peak. Pay as you go fares are cheaper between 09:30 and 16:00 and after 19:00 on weekdays, and at anytime at weekends and on public holidays. Some fares are cheaper if you
aren't travelling via Zone 1. Pink card readers at some Tube, London Overground and National Rail stations tell us which route you have taken so the correct fare is charged. You can find out if there's a cheaper fare for your
journey if you avoid Zone 1 by using the single fare finder at tfl.gov.uk/farefinder

Helping you get home

If you don't have enough pay as you go credit on your Oyster card, you can make one more bus journey before you have to top up again. You can top up your Oyster card at nearly 4,000 Oyster Ticket Stops in newsagents and shops across London.

Go online

Signing up for an Oyster online account protects the balance or Travelcard on your card if it is lost or stolen, gives you access to your journey history for the past eight weeks and is a quick and easy way to top up and/or renew a Travelcard.

If you have an online account you can choose to get email updates about planned disruptions on your regular route and apply for refunds for incomplete journeys.

Getting a refund

If you have been delayed for 15 minutes or more on the Tube or DLR, or 30 minutes or more on London Overground, for a reason within our control, you can get a service delay refund by signing into, or up for, an online account.

Going contactless

Using contactless saves time as you just touch your card on a yellow card reader at the start and end of your journey - you don't need to top up. On buses and trams, you only need to touch in.

Pay as you go fares on contactless and Oyster are the same and both offer daily capping that limits the amount you will pay that day.

If you're using a contactless card, sign up for an online account to get a summary of your travel costs, journey and payment history, and email alerts if there's an issue with the card which could stop you from using it to travel. You can also apply for refunds for incomplete journeys.

Tell friends and family about Visitor Oyster

Visitors to London can buy Visitor Oyster cards online and get them posted to their home address so they have them as soon as they get to the Capital. They can also save money with special offers and discounts on things to do in London. For more information, go to visitorshop.tfl.gov.uk
