The Alan Turing Institute welcomes new Director and a number of new partnerships

The Alan Turing Institute has announced its new director, £10 million of research funding, a research partnership with GCHQ, and a collaboration with Cray and EPSRC.

Big data research hub The Alan Turing Institute, which has now begun operations, has appointed "computer vision" specialist Professor Andrew Blake as its first director. Blake is currently a Microsoft distinguished scientist and laboratory director of Microsoft Research UK and will join the Institute in October.

As the Institute looks to develop partnerships, it has also announced a £10million research investment from the Lloyds Register Foundation and agreed to work with GCHQ on training and research in data-analytical methods that may be applied in open access and commercial environments. In addition, they have agreed a collaboration with US supercomputer maker Cray Inc and EPSRC in order to exploit the analytics capability of the UK's supercomputer (ARCHER) for scientific research.

When the £42million government investment in The Alan Turing Institute was announced in March 2014, techUK was delighted to see recognition of the opportunity the UK has to be a global leader in big data. We looks forward to supporting the important work of the Alan Turing Institute and exploring opportunities for techUK members to engage with the Institute as it continues to develop partnerships with industry and academia.
