The EU Charter of Fundamental Rights to be discussed during international conference

An international conference, organised by the Latvian Presidency and devoted to the role of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union in the EU legislative process, will take place on 28-29 April in Riga.

The conference will be opened by the Latvian Minister for Justice, Mr Dzintars Rasnačs, and high-level experts and academics from various EU Member States will participate in the conference discussions.This conference is the second in a series of conferences by the presidency trio (Italy, Latvia and Luxembourg) devoted to the role of the European Court of Justice in the establishment of an area of freedom, security and justice. The conference will focus on the role of the Charter of Fundamental Rights in the legislative process of the European Union and its application in the European Union's case law. The main goal is to obtain an overview of the application of the Charter of Fundamental Rights, which became legally binding for all Member States and institutions of the European Union with the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon. Special attention will be paid to the impact of the Charter on the area of freedom, security and justice, such as judicial cooperation in criminal matters.

The speakers at the conference will include recognised Latvian and foreign academics and practitioners, such as Ms Ineta Ziemele, a Judge at the Latvian Constitutional Court and Professor at the Riga Graduate School of Law, Mr Egils Levits, the Latvian Judge at the European Court of Justice, Mr Jean-Paul Jacqué, the Honorary Director General and Special Counsellor at the Council of the European Union, and Mr Koen Lenaerts, a Vice-President and Judge at the European Court of Justice.

The conference will take place on 27-28 April at the Riga Graduate School of Law, at Strēlnieku bulvāris 4. The conference will be broadcast online at: www.eu2015.lv
