Tram tracks to be upgraded

Track replacement work will see tram services suspended between Wimbledon and Mitcham from next week.

The closure will run for ten days from Saturday 11 February until Monday 20 February. A bus replacement service will run.

This is part of the tram network's regular maintenance programme and will involve replacing 750 metres of track between Morden Road and Merton Park.

Track and signals will also be replaced in the Dundonald Road crossing area, which will involve the closure of the road and a diversion will be in place throughout the operation.

Rory O'Neill, TfL's Director of London Trams, said: 'Replacing the track and signals will reduce the need for further maintenance at these locations for many years to come and minimise future disruption for customers and local residents.

'In order to carry out our work safely and to keep the overall period of disruption to an absolute minimum, we need to close the tram service between Wimbledon and Mitcham for the duration of the works.'

Customers are advised to use the replacement bus service, which will call at Wimbledon, Morden Road and Mitcham tram stops only, or use alternative local transport to complete their journeys.

TfL staff will be on hand to help at Wimbledon, Morden Road and Mitcham tram stations.
