Two teens rescued from suspected British child sex offender

Two teenagers were rescued from a hotel room in the Philippines following an international investigation into a British man who has been charged with child sex offences.

The Philippine teenagers – two girls aged 15 and 19 – were found in the room with the 57-year-old . Investigators suspect that he had travelled from Japan,  where he had been working, to Cebu in order to meet underage girls.

After acquiring intelligence relating to the man, officers from the NCA's CEOP Command based in both the UK and south east Asia liaised with the International Justice Mission, who focus on reducing violence in the developing world, and the Philippines National Police to initiate a surveillance operation. Phillipines authorities tracked him down to Cebu City, where he was arrested in his hotel room on November 5.

The girls were taken into protective custody by IJM social workers. Further investigations found that three other girls - a 15-year-old and two 13-year-olds - had also had contact with the man.

Johnny Gwynne, Director of the NCA’s CEOP command, said: “British nationals who travel outside of the UK to abuse and exploit children might think they are under our radar, but they should understand our determination to ensure there are no safe havens, and that offenders are brought to account.

"Our international network of officers and staff based here in CEOP Command in London work with partners around the world to make sure that children are kept safe from individuals like this."

The man was charged with attempting to commit child prostitution, having a minor in a hotel room and human trafficking offences. He will remain in custody pending the setting of a trial.

Make a CEOP report

In an emergency you should always call 999 or contact your local police force.

If someone has acted inappropriately towards you online, or to a child or young person you know, you can report it to CEOP. It may be sexual chat, being asked to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable or someone being insistent on meeting up.
