UK must avoid data protection Brexit, says new Information Commissioner

techUK responds to maiden speech by Elizabeth Denham - data passporting key for UK’s future post-Brexit.

Responding to the maiden speech by new UK Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham, Charlotte Holloway, Policy Director at techUK, commented:

“The New Information Commissioner has been clear that a culture of data confidence will be essential to support tech-driven growth over the next decade.

“Data and trade will go hand in hand as the UK outlines a new economic vision outside of the European Union. Key to achieving that vision will be ensuring stable and undisrupted data flows between the UK and the EU. The Commissioner’s recognition of the importance of a stable legal basis (known as adequacy) with the European Union is therefore welcome.

“The impact of not achieving adequacy with European data rules cannot be overstated. As ONS data makes clears in a service-based economy, data passporting effectively supports over 80% of the economy. Indeed, half of all global trade in services depends on access to cross-border data flows.”

“Data passporting must be a top priority for the UK government in its Brexit negotiations. Financial passporting cannot be achieved without it. The government must be unequivocal in their commitment to ensure data flows between the UK and the EU.”
