Unicef UK response to the PASC report on the Syrian Resettlement Scheme

Lily Caprani, Deputy Executive Director, Unicef UK, responded to the Public Administration Select Committee report on the Syrian Resettlement Scheme

“As the situation in Syria worsens, the UK must make sure it continues to meet the targets it is committed to, including its financial support in the Syria region and the resettlement schemes.

“And of course, children need support when they get to the UK. Many of these children and their families have suffered terrible traumas in Syria. The Public Affairs Committee report does highlight some important concerns about the lack of access to mental health services that Syrian refugees arriving in the UK are receiving and this needs to be urgently addressed.

“The UK has also made public commitments to ensure that asylum-seeking children in Europe with family in the UK can be reunited with them without long delays, and to offer refuge to vulnerable refugee children in France, Greece and Italy. We have not seen sufficient progress on these commitments as yet, especially from Greece and Italy. It is not good enough that only eight children were reunited with their families in the UK from Greece and Italy in the whole of 2016.”
