IPCC investigators from the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) are continuing enquiries in Hull as part of the investigation into the fatal police shooting in the city on Tuesday morning.

Lewis James Skelton, aged 31, was injured after a firearms officer discharged two live rounds on Francis Street in Hull city centre, on Tuesday morning (29 November), following reports of a man carrying an axe. He died in hospital later that evening.

During the incident police also discharged Taser. IPCC investigators have recovered the weapons used.

A Home Office post mortem which took place on Wednesday (30 November) confirmed Mr Skelton died as a result of gunshot wounds.

IPCC investigators have met with the family of Mr Skelton to explain our role and how the investigation will progress.

Mr Skelton’s family has informed the IPCC that Lewis had mental health problems. Investigators carried out a search of his flat in Durham Street, Hull recently as part of the investigation.

IPCC Associate Commissioner Tom Milsom said:

“First and foremost, I would like to reiterate my sympathies to Mr Skelton’s family and friends, and all those affected by this incident. We are at the early stages of the independent investigation and making good progress. Investigators remain in Hull over the coming days to conduct witness enquiries with local residents and businesses, as well as collating any additional evidence. On behalf of the family, I would like to request that their privacy be respected at this most difficult time.”

A cordon put in place around the scene to enable forensic examinations has been removed.
