Virtual Reality increasingly seen as a next big thing

Apple lend their voice to that of Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Samsung and Sony in predicting a future of VR opportunties.

When Tim Cook, CEO of Apple Corporation, was asked about this technology trend, which uses goggles that strap a screen to your face and displays images that make you feel that you are in a computer-generated world, he said it's the real deal.

"I don't think it's a niche," he said. "It's really cool. It has some interesting applications."

Cook has added his name to a growing list of executives from companies like Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Samsung and Sony that are bullish about this new technology. They say it could change the way we interact with computers and quite possibly the way we communicate with one another.

Virtual Reality applications are not new and several companies have and are providing solutions for commercial and consumer applications. The technology is still seen as niche at present and true 'killer' applications are yet to reach markets and engage with target audiences in a mass market way.

We are seeing a renewed interest and discussion on this technology. For example, at this year's CES consumer technology fair in Las Vegas there was clearly a renewed focus on VR applications and the opportunities that it can present. Many are predicting that the next 10 years could see an explosion of VR type devices and services as this technology intergrates and enhances our daily lives.
