WWF-UK welcomes IPPR coal report

WWF-UK’s Energy and Climate Specialist, Jenny Banks welcomed the IPPR’s Scuttling Coal report.

“If even one of our ten remaining coal power stations is still running in 2030, it will provide only 3% of our electricity supply but use up over half of the power sector’s carbon target.

“It’s clear that the UK’s old coal power stations need to close by the mid-2020s and this report shows clearly that relying on a UK carbon price alone is neither the cheapest nor the most reliable way to achieve this.

“Investing in the demand side of the equation will save millions on consumer bills and cut emissions more effectively than just replacing coal with gas. The Government must re-think current policies which are skewed in favour of building new fossil fuel power stations and instead do more to encourage innovative low carbon alternatives like shifting demand away from peak time”
