Wales Audit Office - An impressive year for public audit in Wales

The Auditor General for Wales and Wales Audit Office successfully delivered almost the entire schedule of work laid out in their Annual Plan for 2015-16.

The jointly published Annual Report and Accounts for the year ending 31 March 2016 also shows that we are on track to deliver each of our three-year priorities.

The report provides an analysis of delivery and performance - in areas such as impact, leadership, finances, communication and environment. For example:

  • 98% of auditors’ recommendations were fully accepted for implementation
  • £11m of potential savings were identified through audit work
  • 100% of audits were delivered in accordance with quality standards, and
  • £1.2m of cost savings have been generated throughout the business.

The cost of public audit has fallen by a quarter over the past seven years.

An ambitious transformation programme is now underway, supported by approved funding from the National Assembly’s Finance Committee. Steps include enhancing impact through better use of new technology, and maximising the effectiveness of data collection, analysis and communication of findings.

The Auditor General for Wales, Huw Vaughan Thomas said:

“I am pleased with the progress the Wales Audit Office is making, which is thanks to the professionalism, dedication and hard work of staff. We have an important mission:  to ensure that the people of Wales know whether public money is being managed wisely and to help public bodies succeed. I look forward to continuing to achieve this mission by improving and transforming the way we work over the next few years.”

Chair of the Wales Audit Office, Isobel Garner said:

“The Board has continued to challenge performance at the Wales Audit Office and progress against our priorities and targets is very good indeed. But, like all public bodies, we need to continue to adapt, improve and become more efficient to respond to the significant challenges that lie ahead. I’m confident we will succeed in this.”
