Wales’ Chief Medical Officer Dr Ruth Hussey to retire

Dr Ruth Hussey yesterday announced her plan to retire next year after nearly four years as Wales’ Chief Medical Officer and medical director of NHS Wales.

The chief medical officer provides independent professional advice on health and health care matters to Welsh Government Ministers. Dr Ruth Hussey joined the Welsh Government in September 2012 and has made a significant impact on health and health policy in Wales.

During her tenure, the health of the Welsh population has continued to improve – Dr Hussey has worked to tackle inequalities between the health of the most and least advantaged people in Wales.

She oversaw the response to the largest measles outbreak since the introduction of the MMR vaccine, securing improved vaccination rates across Wales. She has also led work to ensure NHS Wales has been fully prepared to respond to a range of health threats, including the recent Ebola outbreak in Africa.

Dr Hussey led the initial response to the Francis inquiry and has worked to improve the quality of NHS healthcare, including the successful introduction of appraisal and revalidation for all doctors.

She is currently leading work to implement and embed the prudent healthcare principles in the NHS and social care in Wales, with a particular focus on strengthening primary and community care.  This summer, Dr Hussey was awarded an honorary degree from Swansea University for her contribution to improving health in Wales.

Health and Social Services Minister Mark Drakeford said:

“There is a proud tradition in Wales of bold action from government to improve public health. Ruth’s leadership on the Public Health (Wales) Bill sits firmly within this tradition.

“I am very grateful for the advice she has provided and I wish her all the best in her retirement.”

Dr Andrew Goodall, chief executive of NHS Wales, said:

“Ruth is passionate about improving health and healthcare, especially improving outcomes for the Welsh population and addressing the role that poverty can play in creating ill health. It has been a privilege to work with her and to have the benefit of her experience and commitment to new approaches.”
