Wales chosen as location for another top American TV Pilot
Wales’s excellent reputation as a successful production base for the creative industries has been a given a further boost with the team behind yet another high profile American TV drama choosing to film their new production in Wales.
Having considered locations throughout the UK and Europe, the makers of the Fox 21 Television Studios, Imagine Television and FX Productions drama pilot, The Bastard Executioner, will film the project in South Wales in March 2015. The pilot was created by Kurt Sutter, who also serves as writer and Executive Producer. Award-winning producer Brian Grazer, Paris Barclay and Francie Calfo also serve as Executive Producers. Sutter and Barclay served as Executive Producers on the long running hit series Sons of Anarchy which garnered enormous critical acclaim and set ratings records during its seven year run on American television network FX. The Bastard Executioner is a period drama that tells the story of a warrior knight in King Edward II’s charge who is broken by the ravages of war and vows to lay down his sword. But when that violence finds him again he is forced to pick up the bloodiest sword of all.
The programme’s makers have spent ten months considering locations in Wales with the help of the Welsh Government’s Wales Screen service, which encourages film and television productions to use locations, crew and facilities throughout Wales.
The production is expected to bring significant economic benefits to Wales both during filming and subsequently to the tourism industry. In 2014, drama productions supported by the Welsh Government spent over £45m in Wales.
Economy Minister Edwina Hart, who met with the makers while they were visiting potential locations in Wales, said:
“This is excellent news for the creative industries sector and for the Welsh economy in general and follows on from several successful programmes which have been filmed in Wales recently. The fact so many production companies are choosing Wales is testament to our beautiful landscape, wonderful historical assets and our highly skilled and dedicated workforce that make our nation an excellent place to produce high quality drama. I wish the programme makers well with the project and look forward to seeing the end result.”
