Wales is full of fantastic people doing exceptional things, says First Minister

With two weeks to go until the close of nominations in the St David Awards, First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones has said: “Wales is full of fantastic people doing exceptional and extraordinary things. Why not give them the recognition they deserve, show them you care and appreciate their tireless work and endeavour. Nominate them for a St David Award.”

Now in their third year, the St David Awards acknowledge the achievements of people the length and breadth of Wales. They were created to recognise the great deeds and contributions made by people from all walks of life.

The closing date for nominations in this year’s awards is midnight on the 27 October.

There are nine St David Awards categories – Bravery; Culture; Enterprise; Citizenship; Innovation and Technology; International; Sport; Young Person and the First Minister’s Special Award.

Nominating people for one of these prestigious awards means much to the nominees. Richard Parks, a finalist in the Sport category in 2015 said:

"I was extremely honoured and humbled to be nominated for a St David Award in 2015.

"I am a proud Welsh man and representing my country, both as a rugby player and now on my expeditions in the furthest corners of our planet, means so much to me.

"It was a wonderful night in the Senedd seeing the other contributions made by people from all walks of life in Wales and meeting all the other finalists. For me, it was an honour just to be part of such a special night and celebration."

First Minister Carwyn Jones added:

"Day in, day out, groups of people and individuals are going the extra mile to make a difference to someone else’s life, overcoming adversity and achieving truly inspirational things.

"We’re privileged to have a great number of unsung heroes, pioneers, sporting legends, entertainers and ambassadors in Wales.

"It’s the support of people and communities across Wales which has made the awards a resounding success in previous years.  Every winner is only on the podium collecting their award because someone has taken the time to put them forward.

"So get involved. Let someone know you appreciate them and what they do."

Nominating is easy, just go to www.stdavidawards.org.uk and put someone forward before midnight on the 27 October 2015.
