Welsh Government scheme providing a boost to Garden City

The Welsh Government’s Vibrant and Viable Places Programme is playing a vital role in the regeneration of Deeside, Communities and Tackling Poverty Minister Lesley Griffiths has said.

The Minister visited Garden City to see how funding is supporting housing and environmental improvement works on the Farm Road Estate which include energy efficiency retrofit and external improvements to homes.

The work has resulted in reduced fuel poverty and carbon emissions as well as ensuring properties are safe, warm and secure.

The scheme also provides major environmental improvements, which are focussed around Sealand CP School, including tree and hedgerow structural planting, improved play facilities and the establishment of allotments.

Over £6 million of Welsh Government funding is be providing to support Flintshire’s Vibrant and Viable Places Programme in Deeside over the period 2014-2017.

Minister for Communities and Tackling Poverty, Lesley Griffiths, said :

“The project in Garden City is making a real difference to the area and to people’s lives. It will greatly enhance the regeneration of Deeside, making the most of opportunities presented by the development of the Northern Gateway site.

“It is another great example of how the Vibrant and Viable Places Programme is underlining the Welsh Government’s commitment to regeneration and tackling poverty in North Wales.

“I am pleased the Welsh Government has been able to support this scheme which is improving Housing Quality, delivering a positive environmental impact and supporting the local community.”

Councillor Helen Brown, Flintshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Housing, said:

"I'm delighted we were able to secure £200,000 of funding for this scheme . It's an exciting project that local residents and the local school are involved in. The improvements to the local environment will benefit the community enormously and enhance the whole area."
