Welsh Government to appoint National Advisor to tackle Violence against Women

Public Services Minister Leighton Andrews will highlight how Wales is leading the way in tackling Violence Against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence.

Addressing delegates at the Welsh Women’s Aid National Conference, the Minister will thank those who support people affected by these issues, and set out the key challenges that still need to be addressed.

Two weeks after the National Assembly for Wales unanimously passed ground-breaking legislation, the Violence against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence (Wales) Bill, the Minister will set out the key milestones in the year ahead:

“When the Bill receives Royal Assent next month we will advertise the post of National Adviser, so we can have someone in place by the Summer. The Adviser will provide high profile leadership, working closely with all stakeholders to identify best practice and to bring about improvements in service delivery.

“I look forward to holding a national education conference in the autumn which will consider how local authorities, schools and even individual teachers can contribute to tackling violence against women, domestic abuse and sexual violence.

“The Bill also commits Welsh Government to producing a comprehensive suite of statutory guidance to public bodies which we have already started working on.

“We can be rightly proud of the progress we have made. We now have the momentum needed to make a significant impact on vulnerable people’s lives in the years ahead.”
