Welsh Government wins Armed Forces award

A Welsh Government policy which supports its employees to become Armed Forces Reservists has won a Silver Award, under the Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) Employer Recognition Scheme.

Public Services Minister, Leighton Andrews has accepted the accolade on behalf of the Welsh Government at a special awards ceremony last friday [30th January].

His key note speech at the event focused on Reservists and the valuable roles they play, both in defence and employment.

The Minister said:

“Reservists are exceptionally hard working and committed individuals.

“Their specialist military training enables them to develop many transferable skills, such as decision making, communication, leadership and team building, which can be of direct benefit to their civilian roles in the workplace.

“We recognise the value and significant benefits such training brings to the workplace and to delivering high quality services to the people of Wales. This is why we are proud of our Reservist employees and recognise the need to support them.”

Working closely with the MoD, Welsh Government has raised awareness and promoted the value of having Reservists in the workplace and further events planned for February.

The Minister also used the event to highlight other initiatives the Welsh Government has implemented to support Wales’ wider Armed Forces Community – for example its current Defence Privilege Card awareness campaign.
