Welsh NHS Confederation comments on Chief Medical Officer's report

A spokesperson for the Welsh NHS Confederation commented on the Chief Medical Officer's report.

“We welcome the report from the Chief Medical Officer, which shows a fall in smoking and drinking rates among young people in Wales since the 1990s.

“Unhealthy lifestyles not only impact our own health but also place significant demand on our health service. As more of us live longer, it is important for ourselves, and our NHS, that we remain healthy, active and independent for as long as possible.

“The report also looks at reducing health inequalities. While people across Wales are living in good health for longer, this health gain is not distributed equally.

“How people live their life – whether they smoke, drink, eat well and exercise – is often shaped by circumstance and socio-economic factors and has a significant effect on their health and wellbeing. Deprived communities, however, need support and this must come from a range of organisations.

“There is still plenty of work to do and we will continue to work with our members to support and encourage people of all ages to enjoy more active and healthier lives and take more personal responsibility for their health which will, in turn, help to secure the future of the health service.”
