Welsh seafood industry head to World Congress

Representatives of the Welsh seafood industry will be heading to the biannual World Seafood Congress in Grimsby this week to raise the profile of the industry in Wales.

The World Seafood Congress, which will be held 5-9 September 2015, brings together a global audience of seafood importers, processors and fish inspectors.

A showcase of Welsh seafood products including: oysters, mussels, shellfish and cockles will be on display in the Food and Drink Wales pavilion along with tastings of seasonal fish and seafood products to raise the profile of Wales as a seafood producing region.

Deputy Minister for Farming and Food, Rebecca Evans commented:

“The seafood sector is important to Wales with aquaculture worth £10.4 million to our economy.

“We are already known throughout the UK and world markets for the high quality of fish and seafood from around our coast and establishing key partnerships at events such as the World Seafood Congress help raise the profile of the industry further.

“As part of our action plan we are also working with the industry to develop a skilled and capable workforce through addressing skills gaps across the supply chain.”
