West Midlands Police officer in court charged with custody assault

A serving West Midlands Police officer is due to appear before Birmingham Crown Court today charged with assaulting a man in custody.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has carried out an investigation  into an incident in the custody suite at Stechford Police Station, Birmingham, on 25 March last year (2015). After reviewing the evidence gathered by the IPCC, the Crown Prosecution Service authorised a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against Police Sergeant Jason Hayles, aged 44.

Police Sergeant Hayles, who is currently suspended from duty, appeared at Birmingham Magistrates Court on March 1 when the case was sent to the crown court.
