Why art in libraries is winning awards
Think libraries could be about gigs, theatre and film? If not, think again.
An Arts Council supported arts in libraries project called Cultural Hubs has been crowned ‘Best Arts Project’ at this year’s National Lottery Awards.
Cultural Hubs is a programme of exciting arts events held in St Helens Libraries featuring theatre, dance, gigs, poetry readings, workshops, exhibitions and films. Since 2013 the project has received £249,701 through our National Lottery funded Grants for the Arts scheme.
We know libraries as amazing places for discovering books. What St Helens has done is to re-imagine the trusted space of the library as a chance to discover something just as special – great art and culture. They have put this discovery of new experiences at the heart of what the library is about, bringing people and places to life. That’s what regeneration is - it’s a simply brilliant idea that richly deserves this award. Brian Ashley, Director, Libraries, Arts Council England.
St Helens Council - which runs Cultural Hubs - works across a network of 13 libraries in the borough, offering something for all ages. The events are often completely free.
