Winner of First Minister’s Christmas card competition announced

Nine-year-old Travis Carter of Ysgol Gymraeg Cwmbrân has beaten off competition from hundreds of school children to design the First Minister’s Christmas Card.

First Minister, Carwyn Jones, will today present Travis with a signed, framed copy of his winning design showing Father Christmas delivering his  presents by a Welsh dragon-drawn sled.

More than 700 entries were received for this year’s competition from Year 3 and 4 pupils across Wales.

The winning card was chosen by the First Minister and will be used as his official Christmas card, which will be sent across Wales and the world.

The First Minister will also be treated to a special performance of songs from Ysgol Gymraeg Cwmbrân’s Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2 Christmas concerts when he visits the school.

The First Minister said:

“I was delighted and impressed by all the entries received for this year’s competition. From the many excellent designs we received, Travis’ striking and clever image caught my eye. I’m sure it will bring a smile to the faces of all those who see it this Christmas. I would like to thank all those who took part in this year’s competition and wish them all a very merry Christmas.”

Travis said:

“I wanted to make sure that the Christmas card design was as Welsh as possible so decided to use a dragon instead of reindeers.”

Ysgol Gymraeg Cwmbrân  headteacher Catrin Evans said:

“Everyone had great fun taking part in the Christmas Card competition and were thrilled to hear Travis had won and are very excited to welcome the First Minister here.”
