Yorkshire to host 2019 UCI Road World Cycling Championships

The successful joint bid includes £24 million of Government investment to leave a lasting legacy across the country.

The sensational news, announced by UCI President Brian Cookson OBE, cements Yorkshire’s reputation as a world-class cycling destination.

The joint bid by Welcome to Yorkshire, British Cycling, UK Sport and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport includes a £24 million commitment from government to the event and its legacy, as well as an additional £3 million of National Lottery funding from UK Sport. The government will invest £15 million of the budget to help develop 27 cycle sport facilities across the UK, which will leave a lasting legacy at grassroots level.

Sports Minister Tracey Crouch congratulates everyone involved in successful bid

Welcoming the news, Sports Minister Tracey Crouch said:

I am delighted that our bid to host the UCI Road World Championships in 2019 has been successful. The government is backing the event with investment to stage the Championships and leave a legacy that will help strengthen cycling at the grassroots across the country.

As a nation we have a great history in staging some of the biggest events in sport and I look forward to working alongside Welcome to Yorkshire, British Cycling and UK Sport on these Championships. Yorkshire has embraced major cycling events in recent years and I know the county will put on a fantastic show in 2019.

Praise the winning application Mr Cookson said:

Since hosting the Tour de France’s Grand Départ in 2014 and subsequent Tours de Yorkshire, the county has proved it is a fitting host for road cycling’s leading annual event and we are sure there will be world class crowds to match.

Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire said yesterday:

Today marks a moment in history. Yorkshire has shown it can host world-class events with the Grand Départ and Tours de Yorkshire, and now the county has been chosen to host the nine-day UCI Road World Championships in 2019.
